About FM files

The .fm extension represents a diverse set of proprietary formats, most notably the Adobe FrameMaker document used for enterprise-grade technical authoring. While Adobe FrameMaker excels at handling long, complex documents with structured content, the native .fm format is highly restrictive. It cannot be opened by standard word processors like Microsoft Word or viewed in web browsers, making collaboration with non-technical staff difficult. Furthermore, viewing these files requires an expensive software license or a specialized viewer. To overcome these barriers, .fm files are typically converted to PDF for universal distribution, HTML5 or XML for web integration, and RTF or DOCX for editing in other word processors.

Secondary uses for the extension include data files for the popular simulation game Football Manager and legacy database files from Claris FileMaker. Game files are generally binary and locked to specific versions of the software, often requiring extraction tools rather than direct conversion. Legacy FileMaker databases often trap data in obsolete structures; exporting these to CSV or Excel is essential for migrating valuable records to modern systems. Additionally, in engineering contexts, .fm may refer to part files from Autodesk FeatureCAM, used in CNC programming, which often need conversion to STEP or IGES for interoperability with other CAD tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BOOK, FMF, FM_SAFE_FOLDER, MIF, BIN, ZIP, PNG, MP3, PDF, FRM, EDZ, PKL and BK files.

The FM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FM converter.
