The .metadata file extension is a catch-all category used by various software applications to store "data about data." Because it serves as a supplementary sidecar file, its internal structure heavily depends on the specific software that generated it.
The primary disadvantage of the .metadata format is its complete lack of standardization. It is proprietary to the application context. Consequently, users face immense frustration because there is no default program assigned to open these files, and standard text editors will display garbled text if the file is binary.
