About METADATA files
The .metadata file extension is a catch-all category used by various software applications to store "data about data." Typical use cases include storing binary property lists (plist) for Xcode, crash reports for Google Chrome, and package details for Python. Because it serves as a supplementary sidecar file, its internal structure heavily depends on the specific software that generated it.
The primary disadvantage of the .metadata format is its complete lack of standardization. It is proprietary to the application context. A file might contain readable JSON or XML, or it might be an unreadable binary blob like an Apple property list or a Google Safe Browsing database. Consequently, users face immense frustration because there is no default program assigned to open these files, and standard text editors will display garbled text if the file is binary.
Standard online converters generally fail to process .metadata files because they rely solely on the file extension rather than the internal file signature. They attempt to process a generic data file without knowing if it requires a JSON parser or a binary decoder. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the structured data safely.
When you need to extract information from these files, the most realistic target formats are TXT, JSON, or XML. Attempting to convert them to document formats like PDF or DOCX will result in messy, unformatted code blocks and loss of internal data hierarchy. Our platform inspects the internal hex signature. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like plain text or JSON - viewing or extraction may still be possible directly in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your METADATA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert METADATA file to JSON, CSV, IMAGE, XML, TEXT, PDF, VIDEO, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use Xcode or similar software from the "Supplementary Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to METADATA, try Xcode or another comparable tool in the "Supplementary Data Storage" category.
The METADATA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our METADATA converter.
