About MDV files
The .MDV file primarily functions as a Knitting Machine Pattern created by Stoll M1plus, containing specialized instructions for computerized industrial knitting machines. Alternatively, in engineering contexts, it serves as an AutomationML data exchange file associated with Autodesk Inventor, or as a PLC communication driver file for Pro-face GP-Pro EX.
The major disadvantage of the primary Stoll .MDV format is its highly proprietary nature. Based on the legacy Microsoft Compound file structure, it requires a costly industrial software license to open. It is entirely closed-source, meaning you cannot natively view it on Windows or macOS, and standard web browsers cannot interpret the complex knitting logic. This makes sharing designs with clients or non-technical stakeholders extremely difficult.
To share these designs, users must typically convert the visual patterns to standard raster images like PNG or JPG, or export the technical manufacturing specifications to PDF. For the secondary AutomationML variant - which is structurally a ZIP archive - extracting the internal 3D assets into universal engineering formats like STEP or IGES is the standard workflow.
Because the .MDV knitting pattern is a closed ecosystem, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original Stoll software can properly read or export the data. Our platform will inspect the internal headers (distinguishing between a Microsoft Compound container or a ZIP archive) and allow you to view extracted text or internal assets, giving you a pragmatic workaround for unreadable files.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MDV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MDV file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Stoll M1plus or similar software from the "Knitting Machine Pattern File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to MDV, try Stoll M1plus or another comparable tool in the "Knitting Machine Pattern File" category.
The MDV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDV converter.
