About BIT files

The .BIT file extension most frequently identifies a Bitstream Configuration File generated by AMD Xilinx software, such as Vivado Design Suite or the legacy ISE. These files contain the binary programming data required to configure Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), along with proprietary header information (design name, part number, date, and time). While essential for development, the format presents significant friction: the inclusion of non-executable header data makes .BIT files incompatible with many third-party flash programmers or bootloaders that expect raw binary data. Furthermore, these files are hardware-specific and unreadable by standard text editors. To prepare a design for non-volatile memory storage or production programming, engineers typically convert .BIT files to MCS (Intel HEX format), BIN (Raw Binary), or HEX files.

A secondary, legacy use of the format is the Qualcomm PureVoice audio file. These are compressed speech recordings from older mobile technologies. They are often unplayable on modern media players without specific codecs. For archival or playback, users should convert these audio .BIT files to widely supported formats like MP3, WAV, or AAC.
