The .BIT file extension is primarily an FPGA Configuration Bitstream File generated by AMD Xilinx software like the Vivado Design Suite or legacy ISE Design Suite. It contains the binary configuration data required to program a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip. Less commonly, .BIT is used for Qualcomm PureVoice encoded speech audio, encrypted data in FinalCrypt, or legacy Battle Realms game bitmaps.
The main problem with .BIT files is their proprietary and highly hardware-specific nature. A bitstream compiled for a specific Xilinx or Lattice FPGA model will not work on any other chip. Furthermore, they are compiled binary blobs, completely unreadable by standard text editors. For the audio variant, Qualcomm PureVoice files are practically obsolete and unsupported by modern media players or web browsers, forcing users to rely on outdated software to listen to them.
