About THING files

The .THING file extension represents a container format used primarily by MakerBot Thingiverse to package 3D printing projects. While convenient for downloading entire projects - including STL meshes, JPG previews, and licensing text - this format introduces significant friction for 3D printing workflows. Most modern slicers, such as Ultimaker Cura or PrusaSlicer, do not recognize .THING files natively, leaving users unable to prepare their models for printing. Furthermore, older proprietary versions of the format may be locked to legacy MakerBot software, making them inaccessible on standard systems. To utilize the 3D data inside, users typically need to convert the container into a standard ZIP archive to extract the geometry, or convert the internal models directly to STL or OBJ for immediate editing and printing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your THING file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MAKERBOT, ZIP, STL, S3G and X3G files.

The THING Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our THING converter.
