About KEY files
The .KEY extension serves two distinct but critical functions: usually an Apple Keynote presentation or a cryptographic security credential.
1. Apple Keynote Presentations: These are the default project files for Apple Keynote, macOS's answer to PowerPoint.
- The Problem: The format is highly proprietary. Sending a raw .KEY file to a Windows or Android user typically results in an "unable to open file" error, as Microsoft PowerPoint does not natively support it. This is a key problem in cross-platform business environments.
- The Solution: For collaboration, converting .KEY to PPTX allows editing in PowerPoint. For finalized reports where layout preservation is paramount, converting to PDF ensures the slides look identical on any device.
2. Cryptographic & License Keys: Roughly 25% of .KEY files are security assets used by OpenSSL, PuTTY, or software like Avira Antivirus.
- The Problem: These text or binary files (often storing private keys or registration codes) are sensitive and format-strict. A server might require a PEM file while your generation tool output a .KEY file, causing deployment failures.
- The Solution: Administrators often convert these keys to standardized formats like PEM, DER, or TXT to satisfy specific server or software requirements.

The KEY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KEY converter.
