About M2 files

.M2 files are the proprietary 3D model assets used by Blizzard Entertainment to render characters, buildings, and environmental objects within World of Warcraft. These files contain the essential vertex geometry, bone structures for animation, and texture mapping coordinates required by the game engine.

Because .M2 is a specialized binary format optimized strictly for real-time game rendering, it is incompatible with standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya by default. Users looking to extract models for 3D printing, machinima animation, or fan art often hit a wall: the files cannot be opened by standard image viewers, they often rely on separate SKIN files for mesh definitions and BLP files for textures, and proprietary encryption or version changes can break compatibility with older tools.

To make these assets usable, the best workflow is converting them to widely supported exchange formats. For 3D printing, converting to STL is ideal as it simplifies the geometry. For animation and rendering, converting to FBX or OBJ preserves the necessary mesh data for import into tools like Unity or Unreal Engine. Occasionally, .M2 may also refer to legacy PC-98 game music files, which require conversion to MP3 or WAV for modern playback.

Convert.Guru analyzes your M2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MD, WMB, PLY, LXF and CM2 files.

The M2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our M2 converter.
