About LZ4 files

The .LZ4 file extension represents a file compressed using the LZ4 lossless data compression algorithm. Developed by Yann Collet, LZ4 is famous for extremely fast compression and decompression speeds, rather than high compression ratios. It is heavily used in performance-critical applications, such as Apache Spark event logs, Apple SensorKit data, and 3D game assets. Most notably, Mozilla Firefox uses a custom variant (often seen as jsonlz4 or mozlz4) to store browser profiles and bookmark backups. The main disadvantage of the .LZ4 format is poor mainstream compatibility. Unlike ZIP or RAR, raw .LZ4 files cannot be opened natively by Windows Explorer or macOS Finder. Furthermore, LZ4 is primarily a single-stream compressor, meaning it does not archive multiple files or directories on its own unless combined with a tarball to create a .TAR.LZ4 file. If you try to open a Firefox bookmark file with standard LZ4 tools, it will fail because Mozilla adds a proprietary header to their files. To make these files accessible, you usually need to convert them. Extracting the data and repacking it into a standard ZIP or GZ file makes it universally readable. For Firefox jsonlz4 files, the goal is often to extract the plain JSON text. This format is notoriously difficult for standard online converters to process because there are multiple framing formats, including legacy frames, standard frames, and Mozilla's custom headers. Normal archivers like 7-Zip require third-party plugins to understand the standard LZ4 frame, and they will completely reject Mozilla variants. Our analysis can often bypass these header issues to extract the underlying data or show text content.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LZ4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMG, JSONLZ4, MD5, TAR, MOZLZ4, ZIP, HG, TXT, LZ, 7Z, BAKLZ4, DCB and BIN files.

The LZ4 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LZ4 converter.
