About LZ4 files
LZ4 files are data archives compressed using the LZ4 algorithm, a lossless compression method created by Yann Collet that prioritizes extremely fast decompression speeds over maximum file size reduction. While standard archive formats like ZIP or RAR focus on squeezing files as small as possible, .LZ4 is engineered for real-time performance, making it a standard for Linux kernel compression, Apache Spark event logs, and Apple SensorKit data. A significant portion of users encounter this format within Mozilla Firefox, which uses a variation (often with extensions like JSONLZ4 or MOZLZ4) to store bookmark backups and session data.
The main problem with .LZ4 files is that they are often raw compressed streams rather than structured archives, meaning standard operating system tools cannot simply "unzip" them by double-clicking. Furthermore, Firefox-generated LZ4 files use a non-standard header ("mozLz40") that causes generic LZ4 decompression tools to fail with "corrupt file" errors. This is a common source of difficulty for users trying to recover browser data or view logs without command-line expertise. For general access, the best solution is to decompress the file to its original format (often JSON, TXT, or LOG). For easier sharing and archiving without compatibility headaches, converting the stream into a standard ZIP or 7Z file is recommended, ensuring the content is accessible on any device without specialized software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LZ4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted IMG, JSONLZ4, MD5, TAR, MOZLZ4, ZIP, HG, TXT, LZ, 7Z, BAKLZ4, DCB and BIN files.
The LZ4 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LZ4 converter.
