About MD5 files

The .md5 file format is a standard plain text document containing a 32-character hexadecimal checksum generated by the Message-Digest Algorithm 5. Its primary use case is verifying that a downloaded file is identical to the original and has not been corrupted or tampered with. These files are heavily used in flashing Android devices via the Samsung Odin tool (often packaged as .tar.md5) and by video game repacking groups like FitGirl to ensure installation archives are intact. You can generate or verify them using tools like MD5summer, QuickSFV, or Windows CertUtil. However, the .md5 format has significant disadvantages. The MD5 algorithm itself is cryptographically broken and highly vulnerable to collision attacks, making it unsuitable for modern security needs. Furthermore, users often mistake .md5 files for executable software or ROMs, leading to frustration when their operating system fails to run it. If the file is actually a .tar.md5 firmware package, opening it requires specialized archive extractors rather than standard text readers. To resolve these issues, you often need to convert or extract the file. For simply reading the hash, convert it to TXT. If it is a Samsung firmware file, converting or renaming it to TAR allows you to extract the underlying Android images like boot.img and system.img. If you are upgrading your security protocols, you should generate new hashes in SHA256.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MD5 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MD, LZ4, PIT, SFV, MDS, MSD, PDF, TXT, EPUB, ZIP, SHA, MDF and ELF files.

The MD5 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD5 converter.
