The .MOZLZ4 file format is a custom compressed data container utilized primarily by Mozilla Firefox. It is specifically designed to store critical browser profile data, including search engine configurations (often found as search.json.mozlz4), session states, and bookmark backups.
Standard compression utilities cannot open .MOZLZ4 files. Mozilla intentionally added a custom 8-byte magic header (mozLz40\0) to the standard LZ4 compression algorithm. Because of this non-standard header, normal archiving tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR will fail to extract the contents, returning file corruption or unrecognized archive errors. This arbitrary restriction makes the format frustratingly opaque for users trying to recover, audit, or migrate their own browser data.
To make the data readable, you must decompress the file into its underlying format, which is almost always JSON. Converting to JSON allows you to view your raw bookmarks or search settings in plain text, which can then be parsed into CSV for easier reading in database or spreadsheet applications.
