The .LREC file is a legacy web session recording created by Linktivity, a web conferencing suite originally developed by Inter-Tel (which is now part of Mitel). Instead of standard video codecs, these files contain a proprietary binary stream of screen activity, voice audio, keyboard chat logs, and attendee data. Historically, users relied on the standalone Inter-Tel Collaboration Player or Linktivity Player to view these online meeting sessions.
The primary disadvantage of the .LREC format is its heavily closed nature. Because it relies on proprietary encoding, it is completely incompatible with modern media players like VLC Media Player or standard mobile devices. Furthermore, the original software is officially discontinued, meaning users often find themselves stuck with unplayable meeting archives.
To preserve the media, the best approach is converting the file to a standard format like MP4 for universal compatibility or AVI for lossless archival. Note that during this conversion, interactive metadata - such as standalone chat text or polling data - will either be permanently lost or visually flattened into the video track.
Because this file format is a complex, undocumented container rather than a true video file, standard online video converters fail to process it. Typically, only the original legacy player can properly read and export the data.
