About TREC files
A .trec file is a proprietary screen recording container created by TechSmith Camtasia. It captures high-fidelity video of screen activity, system audio, microphone input, and cursor metadata (such as clicks and highlights) into a single package. These files are designed exclusively for the Camtasia editing environment, meaning they are not executable video files that can be played in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. Users often face significant friction when trying to share raw recordings with colleagues who do not have a paid TechSmith license, or when attempting to upload the file directly to platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Because they contain raw capture data, .trec files are also typically much larger than standard videos, making storage and transfer difficult. To make the content accessible, you must convert the .trec source into a standard format. For general viewing and web sharing, convert to MP4. For high-quality editing in other software like Adobe Premiere Pro, convert to MOV or AVI. For archiving large recordings, converting to HEVC can significantly reduce file size.
