About IQY files
A .IQY file is an Internet Web Query file used primarily by Microsoft Excel to import data from external websites directly into a spreadsheet. Technically, it is a plain text file containing a URL and a set of parameters that tell Excel where to locate specific data tables on the web and how to format them upon import. While powerful for live dashboards and stock tickers, .IQY files present significant challenges: they do not contain the actual data, only the link to it, meaning they are useless without an active internet connection and a compatible version of Excel. Furthermore, because they execute external scripts, they are often flagged by email filters and security software as potential vectors for malware or phishing attacks. Users frequently need to convert these files to inspect the underlying URL safely or to freeze the dynamic data into a static report. To view the query parameters without executing them, convert the file to TXT. To save the retrieved data permanently for archiving or sharing, the file should be processed and saved as XLSX or CSV.
