About IM4P files

The .IM4P file is an Apple Image4 Payload file. It is a critical component of the secure boot chain for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices. These files store specific firmware payloads, such as the kernel cache, device tree, or ramdisk, which the device loads during startup.

Because they are proprietary to Apple Inc., .IM4P files are generally invisible to regular users unless they are extracting an IPSW firmware update file. These files are highly restrictive. They are often compressed using Apple's proprietary LZFSE algorithm or encrypted with AES keys tied to specific firmware releases. You cannot simply open an .IM4P file in a text editor or standard archive manager. They require specialized reverse-engineering tools like img4tool to parse or unpack.

Converting an .IM4P file usually means decrypting or decompressing the payload into a usable BIN, RAW, or DMG format. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they lack the specific Apple decryption keys and LZFSE decompression libraries required to parse the Image4 format. This is a closed, proprietary format designed explicitly to prevent unauthorized tampering. If our analysis detects an unencrypted embedded format, extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IM4P file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AEA, DMG, ZIP, CPB, DF3 and EPK files.

The IM4P Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IM4P converter.
