About IPSW files
The .IPSW file type is a firmware update archive used specifically by Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and iPod Touch. Internally, these files are structured as standard ZIP compressed archives containing encrypted disk images (Dmg), the operating system kernel, ramdisks, and manifest files needed for restoration. While crucial for system recovery via iTunes or macOS Finder, users often face challenges accessing the data inside. The files are typically very large (often exceeding 5GB), opaque to standard file browsers, and strictly controlled by Apple's digital signature system (SHSH blobs). If a specific firmware version is no longer "signed" by Apple, the .IPSW file becomes effectively useless for standard restoration, leading users to seek ways to extract or salvage data. To access the internal file system for analysis or research, the best conversion path is to ZIP format, which allows extraction of the components using standard tools like 7-Zip. For forensic or development purposes, users may further extract the internal DMG files.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IPSW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IPSW file to ISO, DMG, ZIP, PKG, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW or PART, you can use Apple iTunes or similar software from the "Apple Device Firmware Update" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The IPSW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPSW converter.
