Convert IPSW to another file type
To convert IPSW firmware updates to another format, you need Apple iTunes or other System software.
Convert a file to IPSW
To convert other file formats to the "Device Firmware Update" file type, you need software like Apple iTunes or a similar tool.
About IPSW files
An .IPSW file is an Apple device firmware update package. Users encounter these files when manually restoring or updating the operating systems of iPhones, iPads, and iPods via Apple iTunes or macOS Finder.
Under the hood, an .IPSW file is simply a standard ZIP archive. Inside this container, it holds the encrypted DMG (Apple Disk Image) files, iBoot bootloaders, and baseband firmware needed to initialize and run the iOS device.
Standard online converters fail to process .IPSW files because they are massive, proprietary system images that often exceed 5GB in size. Converting an entire operating system into a simple document format is fundamentally impossible. Users typically want to convert or open these files to extract specific assets, like default Apple wallpapers, or to inspect system binaries for security research and jailbreaking.
The best workaround for accessing the contents is to convert the target format into a ZIP archive. By simply renaming the file extension from .IPSW to ZIP, you can extract the internal file structure using standard archiving software.
Because this is a closed, proprietary format, third-party software cannot execute the firmware. If our analysis detects the underlying ZIP structure, we can help you inspect the embedded DMG payloads and extract specific text or internal content.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IPSW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IPSW file to ISO, DMG, ZIP, PKG, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW or PART, you can use Apple iTunes or similar software from the "Firmware Update and Restore" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to IPSW, try Apple iTunes or another comparable tool in the "Firmware Update and Restore" category.
The IPSW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPSW converter.
