About IGC files
The .IGC file format is the global standard for recording gliding and aviation flight data, established by the International Gliding Commission (IGC) of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). These ASCII text files store time-stamped GPS coordinates, pressure altitude, and engine noise level data, crucial for validating flight records and competition results. A critical component of an .IGC file is the "G-record" (security signature), which verifies that the tracklog has not been tampered with; however, this creates a significant usability constraint. Modifying the file in a text editor to correct metadata invalidates this signature, rendering the flight useless for official claiming. Furthermore, while the format is human-readable text, it is not natively supported by popular visualization tools like Google Earth or general-purpose GPS devices. To visualize flight paths in 3D, analyze statistics in Excel, or share tracks on social platforms, pilots typically convert .IGC files to KML (for Google Earth), GPX (for broad GPS compatibility), or CSV formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IGC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IGC file to GPX, KML, KMZ, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use SeeYou or similar software from the "Flight Data Recording" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to IGC, try SeeYou or another comparable tool in the "Flight Data Recording" category.
The IGC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IGC converter.
