An .ifczip file is a compressed archive containing an Industry Foundation Classes (.IFC) or IFCXML file. Developed and maintained by the buildingSMART organization, it serves as the universal, open-standard format for exchanging Building Information Modeling (BIM) data across different software platforms.
Because standard IFC files are essentially massive, uncompressed text databases containing complex architectural geometry, metadata, and relationships, they routinely exceed hundreds of megabytes. Wrapping them in standard ZIP compression creates the .ifczip file, which reduces the overall file size by 60% to 80%, making cloud transfer and storage feasible.
Despite the storage benefits, the .ifczip format has severe usability disadvantages. Many lightweight 3D viewers and older CAD applications do not recognize the compressed wrapper and will simply throw an error. Furthermore, native BIM applications like Autodesk Revit or Graphisoft Archicad require expensive, multi-thousand-dollar annual subscriptions to open, view, and interrogate these files.
To break free from proprietary software limits, conversion is often necessary. Extract the file to a standard IFC to restore compatibility with legacy BIM tools.
