About IFCXML files

The .ifcxml format is an XML-based representation of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data model, managed by buildingSMART. Architects, engineers, and construction professionals use it to exchange Building Information Modeling (BIM) data across competing software platforms without proprietary lock-in. Users typically open, export, or manage these files using heavy-duty AEC software like Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft Archicad, or Tekla Structures.

Despite its open-standard nature, the .ifcxml format has severe disadvantages. Because it writes complex 3D geometry and structural metadata as verbose XML tags, .ifcxml files are notoriously huge - often up to 400% larger than standard ifc (STEP) files. Furthermore, exporting a model to IFC strips out proprietary parametric behaviors; smart doors or dynamic walls from native software become static, generic objects. Typical web browsers and standard text editors frequently crash when trying to open a 500MB+ .ifcxml file.

To reduce file sizes and improve compatibility, it is best to convert .ifcxml to the standard ifc format or compress it directly to ifczip. For purely visual coordination, converting the 3D geometry to obj, dae, or a 3D pdf is recommended, though be aware that all BIM metadata and classifications will be lost during a mesh conversion.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Generating 3D geometry from raw XML tags requires a specialized BIM engine, which standard online image or document converters lack. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IFCXML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IFCXML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFCXML converter.
