About IES files
A .IES file is a standard photometric data file used to describe the light intensity distribution of a light source, defined by the Illuminating Engineering Society. These ASCII text files contain measurements of light output at various angles (candelas), essential for calculating accurate illumination in architectural simulations and 3D rendering. While .IES files are the backbone of lighting design in North America, they present significant challenges: they are raw text streams that are unintelligible to human readers without visualization tools, and strict formatting rules (based on IESNA LM-63) mean a single syntax error can cause import failures in software like Autodesk Revit or 3ds Max. Furthermore, they are often incompatible with European workflows that prefer the LDT (EULUMDAT) format.
