About RES files

The .RES file extension typically represents a Compiled Resource File used by Windows applications, or a generic resource archive utilized by various game engines. Developers use this format to package graphical user interface elements, icons, cursors, text strings, and version metadata into a single binary container. This container is later linked directly into an executable EXE or library DLL file.

The primary generator of Windows-based .RES files is Microsoft Visual Studio. However, the format is notoriously fragmented. It is frequently used as a game resource archive by the Valve Source Engine, the Godot Engine, and older titles like Project I.G.I. In scientific and enterprise environments, it even stores medical diagnostic data packages for the Varian ARIA oncology system and chromatography data for Cytiva UNICORN.

The fundamental disadvantage of a .RES file is its ambiguity. Because the acronym simply stands for "Resource," the file lacks a universal standard. A Windows .RES file is a compiled binary that cannot be natively edited without the original source script (RC). Game archive .RES files use proprietary compression algorithms that lock 3D models and textures behind obsolete game engines. You cannot simply open these files in standard desktop software, and guessing the originating program is often a frustrating trial-and-error process.

To make the enclosed data usable, you must decompile or extract the container. For Windows resources, convert them back to editable RC text files or extract the icons to ICO. For game archives, the best approach is extracting the internal assets to standard formats like PNG for textures or ZIP for raw data. Drag and drop your .RES file into convert.guru to instantly analyze its digital signature, identify its true origin, and extract its contents securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
