An .HTA (HTML Application) is a legacy executable file designed for Microsoft Windows. Introduced in 1999, it relies on the outdated Internet Explorer engine (Trident) to render HTML, CSS, and scripts (VBScript or JScript) as a standalone desktop application via mshta.exe. Unlike standard web pages, .HTA files run completely outside the web browser sandbox. They have unrestricted access to the local file system, command prompt, and Windows Registry. Furthermore, they are proprietary, completely incompatible with macOS or Linux, and rely on an obsolete rendering engine.
