About HTA files
A .HTA file is a Microsoft HTML Application, a legacy file type that allows HTML and scripting code (JScript or VBScript) to run as a trusted application on the Windows desktop. Unlike standard HTML files which are sandboxed within a web browser for security, .HTA files have full access to the file system and Windows Registry, making them powerful for automation but also a significant security risk if the source is unknown.
Because they rely on the deprecated Internet Explorer engine (mshta.exe), .HTA files are becoming obsolete and are not supported on macOS, Linux, or modern mobile devices. Opening an HTA file can inadvertently execute malicious code. To inspect the contents safely or migrate the code to a modern standard, users should convert .HTA to HTML (to view the interface in Google Chrome or Firefox), TXT (to audit the source code), or PDF for documentation and archiving purposes.

The HTA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HTA converter.
