Convert HM to another file type
To convert HM models to another format, you need Altair HyperMesh or other 3D software.
Convert a file to HM
To convert other file formats to the "Finite Element Model" file type, you need software like Altair HyperMesh or a similar tool.
About HM files
The .HM file format primarily represents a HyperMesh model database created by Altair HyperMesh, a high-performance finite element pre-processor used in engineering and 3D modeling. A smaller portion of .HM files belong to entirely different applications: they can be compressed archives created by Hamster Free Archiver, screenshots captured by HyperSnap, help context mapping files for Microsoft Visual C++, or Portable BitMap images (Netpbm format).
The main disadvantage of the HyperMesh format is its proprietary nature. It requires an expensive, enterprise-level Altair subscription to open or edit. It is not natively supported by web browsers, and standard CAD tools cannot import it without specialized, expensive translators. File sizes often exceed hundreds of megabytes. The Hamster archive variant shares similar distribution issues, as users receiving the file likely do not have that specific archiver installed.
Users typically need to convert .HM files to accessible formats. For HyperMesh databases, standard engineering export targets include STEP, IGES, or solver-specific decks like FEM. For the archive variant, users prefer standard ZIP or 7Z. Image variants are best converted to JPG or PNG.
Because the HyperMesh format is closed, tightly coupled to the Altair ecosystem, and lacks public documentation, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the 3D data. Standard online converters will fail to process these specialized meshes. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a standard archive or a Netpbm image - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DAM, MVW, RBXM, PT, KM and DM files.

The HM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HM converter.
