The .HLF file extension is primarily associated with HydraLIST, a critical component of the HydraCAD and SprinkCAD software suites used for designing fire sprinkler systems. These files function as stocklists, containing detailed databases of pipes, valves, and fittings required for a construction project. Technically, many legacy HLF files are actually Microsoft Jet Databases (the same format used by older MDB Access files), but they are locked behind a proprietary extension. Users often struggle to open these files because standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel do not recognize the extension, making the vital inventory data inaccessible without the original CAD software.
A secondary use for the extension is by Hach analytical instruments (such as the ML600), which generate .HLF files as XML-based data logs containing photometric measurement readings.
To make these files useful outside of their specialized engineering environments, conversion is essential. For HydraCAD stocklists, the best target format is XLSX or CSV, allowing project managers to edit inventory lists in Excel. For archiving or sharing with clients who lack CAD software, converting to PDF is ideal. Hach data logs should be converted to XML (for parsing) or CSV to analyze the raw instrument data.
