The .GRL extension serves two very different masters, creating significant confusion for users. Most frequently in industrial settings, it represents a GRAAL CNC machining file, containing coordinate instructions (G-code) for cutting tools. These files are typically text-based but strictly formatted for Gcfao GRAAL software, making them unreadable to standard text editors or incompatible with different CNC controllers without conversion. The practical friction here is proprietary lock-in; you cannot simply load a GRAAL file into a generic machine like a GRBL Controller without translating the dialect first.
However, in the corporate world, a .GRL file is often a Gliffy Diagram. These are flowcharts or wireframes created with Gliffy. A major pain point is that .GRL is a proprietary container (often a renamed ZIP holding XML data) that web browsers and standard image viewers cannot display. If a colleague sends you a .GRL file and you lack a paid subscription or the specific Confluence/Jira plugin, you are stuck staring at an unrecognized icon. For these users, the solution is converting the vector diagram into a widely accessible format like PDF for printing, or PNG and JPG for embedding in presentations. Less commonly, system administrators may encounter .GRL files as Windows AppLocker rule lists, which are strictly for system policy enforcement and should not be edited manually.
