About GRL files

The .GRL file extension is fragmented and serves several distinct purposes depending on the software that generated it. Most commonly, it is a CAM machining instruction file used by GRBL controllers and GRAAL CNC software to direct automated machine tools. Alternatively, it is a proprietary diagram or flowchart exported by Gliffy, stored internally as a compressed ZIP archive. Other technical uses include Microsoft Windows AppLocker rule lists, Hitachi XRF analyzer grade libraries, and graph representation text files.

Opening or converting a .GRL file is challenging because the computer rarely knows which application to use. If the file is a CNC instruction, it contains plain text coordinates but requires specialized sender software like Universal G-Code Sender to operate a machine. If the file is a Gliffy diagram, you face ecosystem lock-in. This proprietary format often requires an active paid subscription to view or edit, and standard web browsers cannot open it directly. Users typically need to convert Gliffy files to standard PDF, PNG, or SVG for sharing, or import them into alternative platforms like Lucidchart. For CNC files, users often want to convert them to standardized GCODE or NC extensions.

Because of this fragmentation, finding a universal converter is impossible, and standard online tools fail to process them. This is a closed or highly specialized format depending on its origin. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Since Gliffy diagrams are standard archives under the hood and AppLocker rules are formatted as XML, our analysis tool can inspect the internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GRL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GDM, PLAN, INP, LAF, UMDX and TREE files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GRL file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Gliffy or similar software from the "CAM Instructions or Diagrams" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to GRL, try Gliffy or another comparable tool in the "CAM Instructions or Diagrams" category.

The GRL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GRL converter.
