Convert GDM to another file type
To convert GDM Density maps to another format, you need GIANTS Editor or other Game software.
Convert a file to GDM
To convert other file formats to the "Game Terrain Data Map" file type, you need software like GIANTS Editor or a similar tool.
About GDM files
The .gdm file extension primarily represents a Giants Density Map, a proprietary data format used by the GIANTS Engine to render terrain features in simulation games like Farming Simulator. These files store highly compressed spatial data governing object density, such as crop growth stages, grass coverage, and terrain texturing. A secondary, rare use for the .gdm extension is the General Digital Music Module, an old audio tracker format developed by Edward Schlunder.
Users often attempt to convert .gdm files to edit game maps in standard 3D or 2D image software, or to play legacy tracker music. However, the Giants Density Map format carries major disadvantages for external editing. It is a strictly proprietary format locked entirely to the GIANTS Editor and game engine. It is fundamentally incompatible with standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop or 3D modeling tools like Blender because it does not store standard geometry or raster pixels, but rather engine-specific density arrays.
For the music variant, converting to MP3 or WAV is ideal, though it requires specialized tracker audio players. Standard online converters fail to process game-specific .gdm files because the custom encoding requires the original game engine algorithms to interpret the matrix data properly.
Because .gdm is a specialized, closed format, viewing or converting it directly via web tools is extremely difficult. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GDM file to PNG, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC or APE, you can use GIANTS Editor or similar software from the "Terrain Object Density Map" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to GDM, try GIANTS Editor or another comparable tool in the "Terrain Object Density Map" category.
The GDM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GDM converter.
