A .GLIFFY file is a JSON-based vector diagram created by Gliffy, a diagramming tool frequently used as a plugin for Atlassian Confluence and Jira. It stores flowchart shapes, connecting lines, text strings, and exact layout coordinates.
The major disadvantage of the .GLIFFY format is its strict dependency on the original web application. It is a proprietary format locked into a specific ecosystem. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and professional vector editors like Adobe Illustrator cannot open it natively. If your organization cancels its subscription or migrates away from Confluence, you immediately lose visual access to your archived flowcharts.
To ensure long-term usability, you should convert these files to open, standard formats. Target PDF for secure document sharing, SVG for scalable vector editing, or PNG for quick visual reference.
Because .GLIFFY files rely on proprietary shape libraries stored on external servers, standard online converters usually fail to render the graphics correctly. Often, only the original software or highly specialized importers can properly read and export the data.
