About GPS files

The .GPS file extension is a classic example of a 'namespace collision' where one file type serves two completely different industries. Statistically, it is most often a PLC Programming Project created by Mitsubishi GX Developer. These files contain logic, ladder diagrams, and configuration data for industrial automation hardware. They are proprietary, binary, and notoriously difficult to parse without the specific $1,000+ software suite.

However, for many consumers, a .GPS file is exactly what it sounds like: a raw Global Positioning System data log. These are often generated by older GPS trackers, data loggers, or navigation apps that dump raw NMEA 0183 strings or proprietary binary track data into a file. The friction here is immediate: standard mapping tools like Google Earth or Strava typically require GPX or KML formats and will reject a raw .GPS file.

The GPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPS converter.
