A .DMS file is rarely a specific, standardized format on modern operating systems. Most often, it is a mangled or renamed file created when an email client like Microsoft Exchange or a web browser encounters an error processing the MIME type of a download. Historically, it also represents an Amiga Disk Masher System file, a compressed disk image used by classic Commodore Amiga computers to store game or software backups.
The primary disadvantage of a .DMS file is that your operating system has no idea what application to use. Double-clicking it usually results in an error. Because a .DMS file can literally contain a PDF, an Office Open XML DOCX, a JPG, or even a Linux executable (ELF), blindly attempting to open it is frustrating and potentially unsafe.
