About GHO files
A .GHO file is a complete sector-by-sector backup of a computer's hard drive or partition. Created by Norton Ghost, a legacy disk cloning utility developed by Symantec, these files are heavily outdated and highly proprietary. Another minor use case is for game replays in the open-source game Teeworlds. The major disadvantage of the .GHO format is its closed nature and massive size. Files often exceed hundreds of gigabytes. Because Symantec discontinued Norton Ghost in 2013, it is incredibly difficult to open these archives on modern operating systems without legacy tools. Users typically need to convert .GHO to standard disk images like ISO, IMG, or virtual hard disks like VHD or VMDK to mount them in modern virtual machines such as VMware or VirtualBox. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it uses undocumented compression. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GHO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GHO file to ISO, VHD, VMDK, TIB, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP or TAR, you can use Norton Ghost or similar software from the "Disk or Partition Image Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to GHO, try Norton Ghost or another comparable tool in the "Disk or Partition Image Backup" category.
The GHO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GHO converter.
