About GHOST files

A .ghost file serves multiple distinct purposes depending on the context. Primarily, it is a plain text source code file written in Ghostlang, a lightweight, C-like scripting language designed to be embedded in other applications. In the PC gaming community, a .ghost file is a deactivated Bethesda game plugin (often named .esp.ghost). Finally, it is also maliciously used as an appended extension for files encrypted by the GhostLocker ransomware.

Ghostlang scripts can be edited in modern development environments like Visual Studio Code. For gamers, ghosted mod files are typically managed by Wrye Bash to manipulate load orders and hide inactive plugins from the game engine.

Users frequently struggle with .ghost files because operating systems and web browsers do not natively recognize the extension. If you try to open a Ghost script, Windows will prompt you to find an app, and browsers will force a download instead of displaying the code. Gamers deal with the annoyance of the game engine entirely ignoring their mod files until the extension is removed. If your personal documents have suddenly acquired the .ghost extension, they are locked by ransomware and standard software is useless without a decryption key.

To make a Ghostlang script universally accessible, you should convert it to TXT, MD (Markdown), or PDF. If you are dealing with a ghosted game mod, standard conversion does not apply; you just need to rename the file back to its native ESP or ESM format.

Because the .ghost format represents three completely different things, standard online converters often fail to process it correctly. Most tools cannot distinguish between a plain text script, a renamed binary game archive, and scrambled malware data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GHOST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GHO, XGHOST, ISO, JPG, PLG, RWT and ARX files.
