About NGC files
An .NGC file is primarily a plain-text G-code file used to control CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, originating from the RS274/NGC (Next Generation Controller) standard. It contains the precise XYZ coordinates, tool speeds, and feed rates needed for milling machines, routers, and lathes. Alternatively, in the electronic design space, .NGC files function as Xilinx Synthesized Netlist files used by older FPGA design software to represent logic circuits.
CNC .NGC files are typically generated by CAM software and executed by controller platforms like LinuxCNC or Mach3. Xilinx netlists are handled by legacy AMD/Xilinx ISE toolchains.
Because .NGC files are highly specialized plain text, reading or sharing them without a G-code simulator or specialized CAD/CAM software is difficult for non-engineers. Furthermore, if you need to migrate an old Xilinx Netlist to a modern workspace, you face hard compatibility limits since modern tools like Vivado completely dropped support for the format.
To review raw CNC coordinates or share toolpaths, convert .NGC to TXT or CSV to extract the raw data, or to PDF for sharing, printing, and archiving documentation. For legacy FPGA workflows, engineers must use older tools to convert .NGC to EDIF or Verilog.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NGC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NGC file to GCODE, NC, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES or SAT, you can use LinuxCNC or similar software from the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to NGC, try LinuxCNC or another comparable tool in the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category.
The NGC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NGC converter.
