Convert a file to GCD

To convert other file formats to the "Firmware / Scientific Data" file type, you need software like Garmin WebUpdater or a similar tool.

About GCD files

The .gcd file extension represents several distinct, highly proprietary formats. The two most common uses are Garmin Firmware Update files and Shimadzu Chromatography Data files. Garmin uses .gcd files to distribute operating system updates for their GPS devices via Garmin WebUpdater. Shimadzu uses the exact same extension for mass spectrometry and gas chromatography data generated by instruments running Shimadzu LabSolutions. Historically, it was also used for legacy Generic CADD drawings and CHCNAV hydrographic surveys.

Because these files are tightly controlled, they have severe limitations. A Garmin .gcd file is a compiled binary blob that cannot be opened on a PC; it must be flashed directly to a GPS device. Shimadzu data files are locked behind expensive scientific software licenses, making it incredibly difficult to share lab results with colleagues who do not have the same $10,000+ software suite installed.

Converting .gcd files depends entirely on their origin. Shimadzu lab files should be exported to CSV or TXT to allow data analysis in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. They can also sometimes be converted to CDF (Common Data Format) for cross-platform scientific use. Legacy Generic CADD drawings should be converted to DWG or DXF to be opened in modern CAD software. Garmin .gcd files generally cannot be converted to anything else, as they are compiled machine code for specific hardware.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it lacks a unified, publicly documented standard. Often, only the original proprietary software can properly read or export the data. However, standard online converters fail because they do not know which 'version' of a .gcd file you have. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the internal file structure, and show underlying text or metadata. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format - such as Shimadzu's Microsoft Compound structure or a Fuji PLC ZIP archive - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The GCD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GCD converter.
