Convert GSD to another file type
To convert GSD data and designs to another format, you need STEP 7 or other Data software.
Convert a file to GSD
To convert other file formats to the "Device Description or Vector" file type, you need software like STEP 7 or a similar tool.
About GSD files
The .gsd extension is a highly fragmented format. Its most critical use is as a General Station Description file for PROFIBUS industrial networks. These files contain essential hardware configuration data for PLCs and network devices. Another common use case is as a proprietary vector design file for Graphtec and Silhouette craft cutting plotters. Other systems use it for HOOMD-blue particle simulations, Lowrance sonar logs, or even game saves.
Both primary formats present major real-world challenges. PROFIBUS files are plain text but strictly formatted; one wrong character breaks the syntax and ruins the device configuration. Meanwhile, Graphtec cutting files are closed, proprietary vector formats designed to trap your artwork inside their specific software ecosystem. You cannot natively open them in industry-standard vector editors like Adobe Illustrator.
When dealing with PROFIBUS data, your best conversion target is TXT or XML to safely parse the hardware parameters. For cutting designs, you urgently need to convert to SVG or DXF to regain control of your vectors. However, standard online converters fail spectacularly because they cannot decrypt the proprietary cutter format or differentiate between the dozen different types of .gsd files.
This is why this file format is notoriously difficult to process blindly. Usually, only the original authoring software can properly read or export the data. Our engine identifies the true internal signature of your .gsd file. If our analysis detects underlying text, a packaged PDF, or embedded JSON data, viewing or extraction is instantly possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GSD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GSD file to SVG, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN or LOG, you can use STEP 7 or similar software from the "Device Configuration or Vector Design" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to GSD, try STEP 7 or another comparable tool in the "Device Configuration or Vector Design" category.
The GSD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GSD converter.
