Convert a file to GPL
To convert other file formats to the "Color Palette File" file type, you need software like GIMP or a similar tool.
About GPL files
A .gpl file is primarily a GIMP Palette file. These plain text documents store custom color swatches consisting of RGB values and optional color names, used natively by GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to manage digital painting colors. Less frequently, the .gpl extension is used for Gnuplot plotting scripts, Geologix well log data, or GeoPrinter geocaching lists.
While .gpl is an open and easily readable format, its specific text structure creates friction in professional environments. You cannot natively import .gpl palettes into industry-standard software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator without third-party plugins. Manually copying RGB values from the text file is tedious and prone to error.
To bridge the gap between open-source and proprietary software, conversion is required. For cross-platform design work, convert .gpl to ACO (Adobe Color) or ASE (Adobe Swatch Exchange). For front-end web development, convert it directly to CSS, JSON, or CSV to extract usable hex codes instantly. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The GPL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPL converter.
