About FXT files

The .FXT extension represents two distinct but widely used data formats: MetaTrader 4 Strategy Tester files and Grand Theft Auto (GTA) Mod Text files.

1. MetaTrader 4 Strategy Tester File

In algorithmic trading, .FXT files contain the modeled tick data used to backtest trading robots (Expert Advisors).

The Problem: Standard .FXT files generated by MetaTrader 4 often contain low-quality interpolated data (modeling quality < 90%), leading to inaccurate backtests. They are also massive, binary files that cannot be opened in standard text editors.
The Solution: Traders frequently convert high-quality tick data from CSV into .FXT using tools like Tick Story or Birt's CSV2FXT to achieve 99% modeling accuracy. Conversely, you may need to convert an existing .FXT file to CSV or XLSX to analyze the raw historical spread and price data in Microsoft Excel.

2. GTA CLEO "Fake Text" File

Used extensively in the Grand Theft Auto modding community (specifically GTA: San Andreas), these files work with the CLEO Library.

The Problem: These are compiled text files that allow mods to introduce new subtitles, mission text, and menu items without overwriting the game's original american.gxt file. Because they are compiled, you cannot edit them directly in Notepad.
The Solution: Modders use tools like Sanny Builder or FXT Editor to decompile .FXT into TXT source files for translation and editing, then re-compile them for the game.

Legacy Use: Rarely, this extension may refer to old Microsoft Fax document headers, which are now obsolete and best converted to PDF for archiving.
