The .FXT file extension primarily has two distinct uses. Most commonly, it is a Strategy Tester history data file generated by MetaTrader 4 (MT4). This file stores simulated price tick data used to backtest automated Forex trading algorithms (Expert Advisors). Alternatively, .FXT is used in Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game mods via the CLEO Library and Sanny Builder to store custom in-game text strings and cheat menus. Other minor applications include MakeMusic Finale executable plugins and obsolete Microsoft Fax files.
Working with MT4 .FXT files is highly restrictive. They are massive, proprietary binary files that easily exceed gigabytes of storage. They are locked to the MT4 platform and cannot be opened directly in database tools or spreadsheet browsers. Furthermore, they are rigidly tied to a specific broker's server and spread. Users typically want to convert MT4 .FXT files into CSV to analyze the raw tick data using Python or Excel. For the GTA mod variants, users often need to convert .FXT into standard TXT or XML to easily edit dialogue and menu strings without corrupting the game.
Converting an .FXT file is difficult because the MetaTrader format is a closed, undocumented binary structure that standard online converters cannot process. Often, only MT4 itself can properly read or export the trading data using specialized MQL4 scripts.
