The .SSL2 file is a specialized hardware definition file known as a Sunlite ScanLibrary 2 profile. It is the backbone of intelligent lighting control, containing critical data that maps DMX channels to physical attributes like pan, tilt, gobo wheels, and prism effects for stage lighting fixtures. These files are exclusively used by Nicolaudie control software, including Sunlite Suite 2 and Daslight 4.
A major limitation for users is that .SSL2 files are proprietary binary containers; you cannot simply double-click them to view the DMX chart in a text editor or spreadsheet, nor can they be directly imported into competitor consoles like GrandMA or Avolites without manual reconstruction. Users often need to convert these files back to the older SSL format for legacy software compatibility or extract the channel list for documentation. To view or modify the internal logic - such as adjusting a color wheel value - you must use the Scan Library Editor tool bundled with the controller software. For archiving or sharing fixture data with technicians who don't have the software installed, the only practical workflow is opening the file in the editor and manually transcribing the channel map to PDF or XLSX, as direct export options are limited.
