The .fpi file extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes that often confuse users. Most frequently, it represents a Foxit Reader Plugin, a proprietary add-on file used by Foxit PDF Reader to extend functionality (such as spell checking or cloud integration). These are compiled binaries or resource containers; they are not documents, cannot be opened by double-clicking, and are useless without the parent application. Users often encounter these as leftover debris in installation folders, unable to view or convert them to standard formats like PDF or DOCX.
Alternatively, in the gaming development sector, an .fpi file is an FPS Creator Intelligence Script created by The Game Creators. These files control the artificial intelligence behavior of non-player characters (NPCs). Unlike the Foxit plugins, these are human-readable text files. However, the obscure extension means Windows treats them as unknown files. To edit or view these scripts, users must force-open them in a code editor or convert the extension to TXT. Similarly, ForeScout uses this extension for plugin installers, which are often just renamed ZIP archives. For these files, renaming the extension to ZIP often allows you to extract and inspect the contents without specialized software.
