The .FPI extension most commonly identifies a Foxit Reader Plugin file developed by Foxit Software. Under the hood, these files function as compiled executables (similar to EXE or DLL files) designed to add specific modules - such as enhanced PDF rendering or spelling libraries - to Foxit PDF Reader or Nitro Pro. Alternatively, an .FPI file can represent a ForeScout Plugin Installer for the ForeScout CounterACT security platform, or an AI logic script for the FPS Creator game engine.
The primary disadvantage of the .FPI format is its rigid dependency on specific host software. Foxit plugins are proprietary, binary modules lacking a standalone interface, making them useless outside their ecosystem. ForeScout installers, while technically standard ZIP archives under the hood, confuse native OS file managers because of the custom extension, preventing quick inspection of their deployment payloads. FPS scripts are plain text but lack syntax highlighting when opened by default text editors.
