About FLT files

The .FLT file extension is heavily fragmented, leading to frequent compatibility issues. Primarily, it functions as an OpenFlight 3D Scene Description file developed by Presagis, widely used for high-end visual simulations and flight simulators like Prepar3D. Alternatively, it acts as a Filter Plugin Module for Windows software (such as Winamp or Adobe Audition) and as a Grid Filter Settings file for DevExpress UI frameworks.

The main disadvantage of the .FLT extension is ambiguity. You cannot simply "open" an .FLT file without knowing its specific origin. OpenFlight 3D files require specialized, expensive simulation software. Plugin .FLT files are structurally compiled DLL files, which pose security risks and cannot be "viewed" natively. DevExpress grid settings are proprietary UTF-16 or XML text formats bound to specific database views, rendering them useless outside their parent application.

For 3D visualization, convert OpenFlight .FLT models to FBX or OBJ to import them into standard modeling tools like Blender. If your file is an Esri Geospatial Raster .FLT, convert it to a .GeoTIFF for broad GIS compatibility. Plugin and settings .FLT files generally cannot be converted to media formats.
