About SVGZ files
The .SVGZ file format is a Compressed Scalable Vector Graphics file, essentially a standard SVG file that has been shrunk using GZIP compression. While this format reduces file sizes by 50-80%, making it ideal for faster web loading, it introduces significant friction in development and design workflows. Unlike standard SVGs, .SVGZ files cannot be opened or edited in code editors like Notepad++ or VS Code without first being decompressed, as they appear as binary garbage rather than readable XML. Furthermore, using them on the web requires precise server configuration (setting Content-Encoding: gzip), otherwise browsers may download the file instead of displaying it. Compatibility is also limited compared to standard SVGs; some older image viewers and mobile apps fail to render the compressed variant.
To bypass these technical hurdles, the most effective solution is conversion. For code-level editing or maximum compatibility with design tools like Figma, convert your .SVGZ back to standard SVG. For universal viewing on any device or for use in documents, convert to PNG (raster image) or PDF. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to determine the format, view the vector content, and convert it instantly.

The SVGZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SVGZ converter.
