About FL files

The .FL file extension is most commonly known as a Freelancer Game Save file, associated with the classic 2003 space combat simulation game developed by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft. In this context, it stores the player's campaign progress, ship loadouts, credits, and universe exploration states. Alternatively, .FL files serve as Fluorescence Lifetime Decay Data files generated by spectrometry equipment from Edinburgh Instruments. A smaller subset of these files function as FLUID GUI Design files used by the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK) for building graphical user interfaces, or as proprietary firmware updates for Avocent DS Appliances.

Because these formats serve highly specialized and completely different purposes, they suffer from strict vendor lock-in. Freelancer save files are closed binary formats. They are notoriously inflexible, requiring the exact game engine - and often the exact same game mods - to load properly. Trying to share or open scientific .FL files is equally frustrating; they contain raw decay metrics that require expensive, proprietary enterprise analytical software to view, leaving colleagues without matching licenses completely locked out of the data.

Standard online converters fail to process .FL files because they lack the highly specific decoding libraries required for early 2000s game engines or specialized laboratory hardware. For GUI developers, the ideal conversion targets are CXX and H files, which can be compiled natively. For scientific data, converting to CSV or XLSX is essential for broader analysis, but this usually requires exporting directly from the original instrument's software.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FLP, FI, FLA, BIN, SCX, VFD, DL and L files.

The FL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FL converter.
