About DL files

The .DL extension is a notoriously ambiguous filename used by legacy graphics software, scientific tools, and download managers.

1. Legacy Animation (Autodesk Animator / Deluxe Paint)

Most technically significant is the Delta Frame Animation. These are archaic video files from the DOS era, created by software like Autodesk Animator Pro or Electronic Arts Deluxe Paint. They utilize delta compression - storing only the pixel changes between frames to minimize file size on floppy disks.

The Friction: Modern media players (like VLC or Windows Media Player) rarely support this obsolescent format. Opening them often requires setting up a DOS emulator or locating specific legacy viewer utilities.

The Solution: For preservation, these should be converted to MP4 (for viewing) or GIF (for looping animations).

2. Scientific Data (Pajek / UCINET)

In academic circles, a .DL file is often a Data Language file used for social network analysis in software like Pajek or UCINET. These are essentially plain text files describing nodes and edges in a graph.

The Solution: Since these are text-based, you can often convert them to CSV or Excel formats for easier manipulation, or to GML for use in modern graph visualization tools like Gephi.

3. Incomplete Downloads

Users frequently encounter .DL files as temporary placeholders created by download managers (like Xunlei Thunder) or browsers. These files are incomplete binary dumps.

The Solution: You cannot "convert" these in the traditional sense. The file must finish downloading to become valid (e.g., turning into a ZIP or EXE). If the download is stuck, dragging it into a converter will usually result in an error or a corrupt output.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DF, DL7, DLL, BIN, FL, VFD, SCX, L and CL files.

The DL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DL converter.
