About DL files
The .DL file extension does not belong to a single unified standard. It is utilized by several entirely unrelated software applications. Historically, it was used as a Delta frame animation file by Autodesk Animator Pro and as a 3D model file by Deluxe Paint. Modern uses include encrypted data containers generated by the OpenSSL Project, network analysis datasets for Pajek and UCINET, and partial download temp files created by the Xunlei Thunder download manager. The primary disadvantage of the .DL extension is this extreme fragmentation. The operating system cannot reliably guess which program should open it. Furthermore, if the file is an incomplete download, it is fundamentally broken and consists of useless partial binary data. If it is an OpenSSL file, it is secured with strong cryptography and completely unreadable without the specific user key. Legacy animation files from the 1990s are obsolete, proprietary, and lack support in modern operating systems. For network analysis data, converting .DL to CSV or TXT is standard for data portability. Legacy animation files should ideally be converted to MP4 or GIF, though finding software that still supports the original format is difficult. Sometimes, a .DL file is actually just a renamed ZIP archive, which can be extracted directly. These files are notoriously difficult to convert because standard online tools cannot differentiate between an encrypted database, an ancient animation, or an incomplete download. Standard online converters fail to process it because they expect a unified standard. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be successful.
