About FBF files

An .FBF file is most commonly a proprietary backup archive created by older versions of Norton Ghost or Symantec Backup Exec. It stores compressed system data, disk images, or file-level backups. Alternatively, an .FBF file may be a serialized game save created by the Unity engine, a genealogy backup from My Family Tree, or navigation data from the Fugro Starfix positioning system.

Users often encounter these files when attempting to recover old system backups or modify game save data. The primary disadvantage of the .FBF format is its proprietary, closed-source nature. Norton Ghost is defunct, and modern extraction tools cannot easily read its internal file structure without the original software environment. This lock-in makes accessing historical data extremely frustrating, as it typically requires legacy software running on outdated operating systems or expensive enterprise licenses.

Because these are specialized archives or binary save states, direct conversion to standard formats like PDF or JPG is not naturally supported. If the file is a My Family Tree backup, it is actually a standard ZIP file disguised with an .FBF extension, meaning it can be renamed and extracted. For Unity game saves, the internal structure is usually serialized NET data.

Standard online converters fail to process .FBF files because they lack the proprietary decompression algorithms required by Symantec's engine. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a standard ZIP archive - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FBF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FBFT, HTML, DOCX, M3D, TXT, CSV, RBXMX, PDF, SIG, JPG, ENC and BKC files.
