About FBF files
The .FBF extension represents a fragmented landscape of proprietary formats, most commonly serving as a backup archive for Symantec (now Veritas) software like Backup Exec or Norton Ghost. These files are essentially sealed containers holding vital system snapshots or file archives.
The core problem with .FBF files is proprietary lock-in. Unlike open archives (like ZIP), you cannot simply double-click to extract the contents. Users often find themselves with a 10-year-old backup file and no access to the legacy software required to restore it. This makes the data inside - whether it's old family photos or critical system configurations - inaccessible. Furthermore, these files are often large, binary blobs that fail to open in standard text editors.
A secondary but significant use (approx. 23%) is within the gaming industry, where .FBF files act as serialized save data or configuration assets for the Unity engine. These are typically generated by scriptable objects (like Assembly-CSharp) and are not meant for human editing.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Data Recovery: Convert the proprietary backup container to ZIP or 7Z to allow for easy extraction of individual files without restoring the whole image.
For Archiving: If the .FBF is a full disk image, converting to ISO or VMDK allows the system to be mounted virtually.
For Genealogy: If the file comes from My Family Tree, converting/exporting to standard GEDCOM is essential for sharing data with other genealogy tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FBF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FBF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FBF converter.
