A .fas file typically falls into one of two very different categories, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly (over 50%), it is a Compiled AutoLISP Script generated by Autodesk AutoCAD. These files are binary compilations of LSP (Lisp) source code, designed to load faster and protect proprietary algorithms from being viewed or modified. Because they are compiled binaries, you cannot simply open them in a text editor to read or change the logic. This proprietary lock-in is a major catch for users who have lost the original source code and need to update a script. The only way to 'edit' a FAS file is to locate the original LSP file or attempt difficult decompilation.
Alternatively, a .fas file may be a FASTA Biological Sequence, a text-based format used in bioinformatics to store nucleotide or peptide sequences. Unlike the AutoCAD version, these are plain text. However, software often misidentifies them due to the shared extension. For AutoCAD users, the goal is often decompilation (converting to LSP) or extraction of data to TXT. For scientists, the goal is converting these sequences to PDF for publication, or standard FASTA or GBK formats for compatibility with tools like NCBI BLAST.
