About MEGA files
The .mega file format is primarily used by the MEGA cloud storage service and its desktop client, MEGAsync, to store temporary or incomplete file downloads. When you download a file - such as an MP4, ZIP, RAR, or PDF - the software appends the .mega extension until the transfer is fully complete. A secondary use is the Megacubo XML Metafile, used by the open-source IPTV player Megacubo.
Users often try to convert .mega files because a download was interrupted, leaving them with an unopenable file. The main disadvantage of this format is that it is not a standalone file type; it is simply a partial data chunk. Standard online converters fail to process it because the file header or footer is usually missing or the file is still encrypted by MEGA's client-side encryption. You cannot just rename a partial .mega file to MP4 or ZIP and expect it to work flawlessly if data packets are missing.
The best solution is to resume the download in MEGAsync. If that is impossible, target formats depend on the original file. You might attempt to extract data to MP4 for video or ZIP for archives, but expect severe data corruption or playback errors.
Because .mega files are often incomplete, encrypted, or proprietary, they are difficult to open. Often, only the original MEGAsync client can securely resume and decrypt the download.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MEGA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MEGA file to MICRO, BYTES, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD or CRDOWNLOAD, you can use MEGAsync or similar software from the "Temporary File Download Cache" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The MEGA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MEGA converter.
