A .fadein file is a proprietary project archive used by Fade In Professional Screenwriting, a popular and affordable alternative to industry-standard tools like Final Draft. Unlike a standard text document, this file acts as a compressed ZIP container holding your script's text (in XML format), revision history, character lists, and formatting metadata. While this architecture makes the files robust for production, it creates a significant catch: you cannot open them directly in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or standard PDF readers. This lock-in becomes problematic when sharing scripts with producers, agents, or contests who almost exclusively require PDF or Final Draft (.FDX) formats. To share your work, you must typically use the Fade In software to export the file. For a quick "hack" without the software, renaming the extension from .fadein to zip allows you to extract the raw text, though you will lose the critical screenplay formatting.
