About ESP files
ESP files primarily serve as game data plugins for titles developed by Bethesda Game Studios, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Fallout series. These binary files contain modified game data - such as object placement, stats, or scripts - that override the master data in ESM files. While essential for modding, .ESP files rely heavily on the specific game engine version (e.g., 32-bit Skyrim vs. 64-bit Special Edition), creating significant compatibility friction. Users frequently encounter the "255 plugin limit," requiring them to merge files or convert them to the lighter ESL format to maintain game stability. Additionally, .ESP files are not human-readable without specialized tools like Creation Kit or xEdit.
A secondary but significant use of the .ESP extension is for Google Earth Studio project files. Unlike the game plugin, this is a JSON-based format used to save geospatial animation projects. Users working with these files often need to render their projects into standard video formats like MP4 or MOV for broadcast, or export camera data to JSX scripts for use in Adobe After Effects.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ESP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ESP file to ESL, MP4, ESM, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4 or BSP, you can use Creation Kit or similar software from the "Game Data Plugin" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The ESP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ESP converter.
