About BSA files

A .BSA file is a Bethesda Softworks Archive. It stores thousands of game assets like 3D models, textures, sounds, and scripts. Games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 use this format to load data efficiently during gameplay.

You can open or extract these files using official tools like the Creation Kit or community software like Bethesda Archive Extractor (BAE) and BSAopt. Modders heavily rely on these tools to access the vanilla game files.

Users typically need to convert or extract .BSA files to modify the game. The main disadvantage of this format is its proprietary nature. Standard archive software like WinRAR or 7-Zip cannot read it. Furthermore, these files frequently exceed several gigabytes, making them difficult to share or upload.

The best conversion target is a standard ZIP or 7Z file. You achieve this by extracting the internal NIF (meshes), DDS (textures), and WAV files, then repacking them. You will not lose quality during extraction, but repackaging them into a new .BSA requires the correct compression flags for the specific game engine version to prevent game crashes.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because the internal compression and file headers change between game releases. Usually, only the original game engine or dedicated modding utilities can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail because they do not recognize the Bethesda file signatures. Our tool inspects the file, and if it detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BSA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ESP, TEXTURES, NIF, ZIP, BCFZIP, DDW, NPZ and BMI files.
