About BSA files
BSA files are proprietary Bethesda Softworks Archives, the massive data containers used to power iconic RPGs like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas. These files function similarly to a ZIP archive but are strictly optimized for the game engine to stream assets instantly. Inside a single .BSA, you will find thousands of "loose files" - textures (DDS), 3D models (NIF), scripts (PEX), and audio (XWM or WAV).
A common problem with .BSA files is their opacity. You cannot simply double-click them in Windows Explorer to see what's inside, nor can you edit a specific texture without extracting the entire archive first. They are effectively "black boxes" that lock away game content, preventing casual users from modifying assets or accessing the soundtrack. Furthermore, older BSA versions (like those from Oblivion) use different compression algorithms than newer ones (Skyrim SE), causing compatibility errors where standard archivers fail to open them.
To work with the content, you must extract or convert the archive. For graphic modding, extract textures to DDS (DirectDraw Surface) or convert them to PNG for easier viewing. For audio, extract sound banks to WAV or MP3. For 3D modeling, extract meshes to NIF (NetImmerse) for import into Blender via plugins.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BSA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ESP, TEXTURES, NIF, ZIP, BCFZIP, DDW, NPZ and BMI files.
The BSA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSA converter.
