An .ESD (Electronic Software Distribution) file is a highly compressed and encrypted disk image format created by Microsoft. It is primarily used to deliver Windows operating system updates, upgrades, and full installation packages over the internet. You can manage these files using Microsoft's built-in command-line tool, DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management). Note that .ESD files are also occasionally used as XML-based structured document containers in Russian e-invoicing software like Kontur.Diadoc, or as encrypted dental archives by Patterson EagleSoft.
The biggest disadvantage of the .ESD format is its proprietary encryption and extreme compression (using the LZMS algorithm). Because they are heavily locked down, standard archive tools like 7-Zip cannot extract their contents directly without decryption keys. They are practically useless for creating bootable USB drives using standard tools like Rufus unless they are converted first.
To make the file usable for a clean Windows installation, you must convert the .ESD to an ISO image file. If you are customizing a Windows deployment, convert it to a standard WIM (Windows Imaging Format), which is less compressed but editable.
