About CAB files
A .CAB (Cabinet) file is a native compressed archive format developed by Microsoft specifically for Windows software installation. These files function as digital containers that bundle drivers, system libraries (DLL), and setup information (INF) into a single package using compression algorithms like MSZIP, LZX, or Quantum.
While .CAB files are efficient for distributing Windows updates and drivers, they are notoriously rigid for general file storage. Users often struggle with them because they are not natively supported on macOS or Linux, requiring specific third-party tools to open. Furthermore, unlike the ubiquitous ZIP format, standard operating system tools often treat .CAB files as read-only system components, making it difficult to extract, modify, or view contents without command-line utilities like expand.exe. To bypass these compatibility, editing, and access restrictions, users should convert .CAB files to ZIP for universal compatibility or 7Z for superior compression.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MUM, EXE, ETL, SDI, CAP, ONLINE, ZIP, IM4, WSP, AR, INF, FRM and DICOMDIR files.
The CAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CAB converter.
