About ERD files

The .ERD file extension is primarily used to store Entity-Relationship Diagrams. These diagrams visually map out database structures, illustrating tables, columns, constraints, and relational links. Most commonly, these files are generated by DBeaver, a popular universal database tool, and are saved internally as plain text XML. Other platforms, such as the XrmToolbox ERD Plugin, ER Assistant, and web-based editors like dineug, also output .ERD files using XML or JSON structures. Rarely, it functions as a road profile data file for UMTRI systems.

Sharing a raw .ERD file is highly problematic for collaboration. Because it relies on specific, heavy database management software to render the visual layout, recipients without tools like DBeaver or Quest Toad cannot view the diagram. Furthermore, while the underlying XML or JSON data is excellent for machine parsing, it is completely unreadable for human stakeholders, product managers, or clients trying to review a database schema visually.

To share your database models effectively, you must convert the file. For documentation, presentations, or sharing with non-technical teams, convert .ERD to PDF or high-resolution PNG to permanently freeze the visual layout. If you need to migrate the schema to another tool, converting to standard XML or SQL DDL scripts is required. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing complex database software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ERD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ERDPLUS, PGERD, GRAPHML, DRAWIO, PNG, MERMAID, SQL, PDF, MWB, ERX, ER, DOCX and JPG files.

The ERD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ERD converter.
